Retired UPDF General Peter Elwelu has delivered a message on wisdom, patience and experience that has attracted attention amid his reported fallout with Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba.
In a circulating social media video, Elwelu cautions young people against assuming that academic qualifications or positions of authority automatically translate into life experience.
“An old man seated under a tree sees farther than a young man seated on top of the tree. That is important. Where you are sitting today as a young man, that old man was also seated there,” Elwelu remarked.
He further questioned why some young people with degrees and master’s qualifications believe they have achieved everything, urging them to learn from older people who have navigated similar stages of life.
Although Elwelu did not explicitly mention Muhoozi in the quoted remarks, the video has emerged amid escalating tensions between the retired general and the army chief.
Muhoozi has reportedly ordered security personnel searching for Elwelu to capture him alive, amid allegations of arms stockpiling and treachery. The CDF has also announced the recovery of firearms and ammunition allegedly linked to the retired officer, alongside the reported arrest of his driver.

The allegations have not been independently verified, and Elwelu’s current whereabouts remain unclear. He previously served as Deputy Chief of Defence Forces before retiring in 2025.
Elwelu’s remarks have added another dimension to the unfolding dispute, with his emphasis on patience and the wisdom of elders drawing attention as questions persist over his reported disappearance and the allegations against him.
