“PLU Is About Fighting Poverty, Not Politics” – Mawanda Clarifies Patriotic League’s Mission

Igara East Member of Parliament and Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Central Executive Committee member, Hon. Michael Mawanda, has dismissed claims that the organization is primarily a political outfit, insisting that its main focus is poverty eradication and socio-economic transformation.

Speaking during an interview with UBC TV, Mawanda said PLU’s mission goes beyond political competition and is centered on improving the livelihoods of ordinary Ugandans through patriotism, self-reliance, and citizen-driven development.

“Our priority is fighting poverty and promoting socio-economic transformation. PLU is not focused on politics; we are focused on empowering Ugandans to take charge of their own development,” Mawanda explained.

The PLU, which evolved from the MK Movement associated with Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, describes itself as a patriotic civic organization rather than a political party, despite attracting significant support from politicians and influential figures across the country.

Mawanda, who also serves as the organization’s Director of Mobilisation, emphasized that citizens should not expect the government to solve every challenge on their behalf. Instead, he urged Ugandans to take personal initiative and actively contribute to national development.

“We need to remind Ugandans that not everything is done by government; some things are done by the people themselves. That is why, as PLU, we are preaching patriotism essentially, love for one’s country”, he emphasized.

His remarks come amid growing public debate over PLU’s expanding influence within the ruling National Resistance Movement (NRM) and Uganda’s broader political landscape. Critics have often viewed the organization as a political faction, but its leaders maintain that it is a civic movement dedicated to promoting patriotism, good governance, and economic empowerment.

Mawanda’s statement forms part of PLU’s ongoing nationwide mobilization campaign, which focuses on key issues including youth employment, anti-corruption efforts, leadership, and socio-economic transformation.

As discussions about Uganda’s future continue, PLU leaders say their vision remains rooted in empowering citizens and fostering a culture of patriotism as a foundation for national development
