St Mary’s Kitende Rejected Me- Denis Onyango Reveals

Mamelodi Sundowns goalkeeper Denis Onyango is known for his bold personality and is never shy to speak his mind on different matters.

While speaking on the NBS TV show People & Power, Onyango revealed how he was rejected by St Mary’s Secondary School, Kitende.

St Mary’s SS Kitende is one of the schools that has produced some fine football talents and each team in the local league has used at least one player from that mighty footballing school.

However, Onyango missed a chance to be part of the long list of products from this school something that he vividly recalls to date.

“My first (choice) school was St Mary’s Kitende and it was a new school then around 2002 however they were more focused on quality players,” he narrated.

“So when I went there, they did not like me by then, I wanted the school but the coach was not interested in me. When I was rejected at St Mary’s Kitende, I went to Kampala Citizen where I was appreciated,” he added.

“Fortunately, we played a cup called Buganda Cup and there was Kitende. I said this is my time to show them who I was. We thrashed them (Kitende) 4-0.”

However, amidst the setback, Onyango hardly looked back and he has gone on to write such a beautiful football story.

He stands as the most decorated player to feature in South Africa’s local league after lifting 10 PSL titles and three Nedbank Cups.

He was also voted as CAF’s best player an achievement that marked the epitome of his colourful journey. Not forgetting he was the captain as Uganda Cranes broke the jinx to return to AFCON in 2017.
