Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba has vowed to “rescue” the people of Masaka from State Minister for Local Government and Masaka City Woman MP Justine Nameere, escalating their increasingly public political dispute.
The remarks come days after Muhoozi gave Nameere seven days to apologise to him over a dispute linked to a circulating video and her political activities. He warned that failure to apologise could have unspecified consequences.
Muhoozi has also claimed that he and President Yoweri Museveni enjoy strong support in Masaka while questioning Nameere’s political backing in the city. He has separately threatened to campaign against her if necessary.
The dispute has unfolded alongside a continuing legal challenge to Nameere’s election as Masaka City Woman MP.
The Electoral Commission initially declared National Unity Platform (NUP) candidate Rose Nalubowa the winner of the January 2026 election. Nameere challenged the result, leading to a court-supervised recount in which Masaka Chief Magistrate Albert Asiimwe declared her the winner.
Nalubowa subsequently petitioned the High Court seeking to overturn Nameere’s victory. The case remains active, with the Masaka High Court scheduled to hear the petition. Her lawyers are challenging the legality of the recount and the decision that resulted in Nameere being declared the winner.
The political tension has also intensified within the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU), where Muhoozi is chairman and Nameere has been involved in mobilisation activities.
Nameere has previously pushed back against criticism surrounding the dispute, while PLU Secretary General Daudi Kabanda has separately questioned her election victory and called for a fresh election.
The latest confrontation has therefore brought together two separate but overlapping disputes: Muhoozi’s demand for an apology and the unresolved legal challenge surrounding Nameere’s parliamentary seat.
Nameere, has exactly 72 hours to apologise to me. If she does not I will remove her from her ministerial post.
