Kumi Municipality Member of Parliament, Hon. Silas Aogon has called on the Ugandan government to urgently facilitate medical care for former Speaker of Parliament Anita Annet Among, citing growing health concerns and appeals from leaders in the Teso sub-region.

Aogon stressed that despite ongoing corruption, money laundering, and illicit enrichment investigations linked to Among alongside reports of property raids and asset seizures—her right to medical treatment should not be compromised.

“Please give her the chance to get proper medical attention,” Aogon said during an exclusive interview with Parliament Watch Uganda, emphasizing that humanitarian considerations must take precedence over political disputes.

Reports circulating in recent days suggest that Among, who did not seek re-election as Speaker, is in a fragile health condition and may require specialist treatment abroad.

The concerns were first amplified after former Kampala Central MP Muhammad Nsereko shared a widely circulated video on X (formerly Twitter), claiming he had visited her at home and observed visible frailty, including swollen legs. In the video, Nsereko appealed for government intervention to facilitate urgent medical evacuation.

“This is no longer a political matter. She needs prayers and urgent medical attention,” Nsereko said, noting what he described as silence from several legislators despite her reported condition.

A close aide to Among, speaking anonymously due to lack of authorization to comment publicly, confirmed that she requires urgent medical attention but declined to provide further clinical details or confirm whether referral abroad had been arranged. As of publication, there has been no official communication from Parliament regarding any medical evacuation plan.

Among, who was sworn in as Bukedea District Woman MP following the 2026 general election, has maintained a low public profile since taking office. Shortly after her swearing-in, security agencies reportedly carried out coordinated operations at her residences in Nakasero, Kigo, and Bukedea as part of investigations into allegations including corruption, abuse of office, illicit enrichment, and money laundering.

Authorities are also reported to have seized several assets during the operations, including a luxury vehicle, though no formal charges have been publicly announced to date. Among has previously denied any wrongdoing.

Medical professionals caution against drawing conclusions from visible symptoms alone. Kampala-based physician Dr. Davis Mugambe noted that swelling of the lower limbs (edema) can result from a range of conditions, including deep vein thrombosis (DVT), cardiovascular disease, kidney or liver disorders, lymphatic complications, medication side effects, or prolonged immobility.

“Severe swelling may indicate deep vein thrombosis, which can be life-threatening if it leads to pulmonary embolism,” Dr. Mugambe explained. “However, without diagnostic tools such as Doppler ultrasound scans and laboratory tests, it is not medically appropriate to determine the exact cause.”

He further observed that while prolonged immobility is a known risk factor for DVT, Uganda’s health system still refers certain complex vascular and cardiovascular cases abroad due to limited specialized capacity.

The developments have reignited public debate over the balance between ongoing criminal investigations and the state’s responsibility to safeguard the health and rights of individuals under scrutiny
