Senior Presidential Advisor Gen. Proscovia Nalweyiso has defended the military’s involvement in the arrest of Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago, arguing that security agencies had sufficient grounds to act.
Speaking on Sanyuka TV, Nalweyiso claimed that the Uganda Communications Commission (UCC) failed to take action, forcing the military to intervene.
“UCC failed to take action and we stepped in. In Lukwago’s case, he was supposed to be arrested. Lukwago already had cases, and he knew about Dr. Kizza Besigye’s plans but remained silent. Let me tell you, the last time we raided Joseph Kony’s premises, we found congratulatory letters from leaders within Kampala, but I begged the army to forgive them,” Gen. Nalweyiso said.
She suggested that some opposition figures have long-standing links to activities that security agencies consider suspicious, citing letters allegedly recovered during a previous raid on Joseph Kony’s hideout as an example.
The remarks come as Lukwago faces treason-related charges following his June 2026 arrest.
