Three senior officials from Iganga Hospital have been remanded to prison after appearing in court over allegations of causing financial loss to the government amounting to Shs1.8 billion.

The accused are Senior Hospital Administrator Ramathan Gaboli Mugolofa, Hospital Medical Superintendent Dr. Dauda Mugoya, and Senior Accountant Michael Isabirye.

The trio appeared before Principal Magistrate Grade One Christopher Opit on Wednesday, July 22, 2026, facing charges of money laundering, causing financial loss, forgery, and conspiracy to defraud.

The magistrate did not allow the accused to take plea on the money laundering charge, explaining that the court lacks jurisdiction to hear the offence. They were subsequently remanded to prison until August 4, 2026, when the case will return to court for mention.

According to the prosecution, the three officials, together with others still at large, allegedly irregularly processed payments worth Shs1.8 billion during the 2022/23 and 2023/24 financial years, despite knowing that their actions would cause financial loss to the government.

Prosecutors further allege that the suspects laundered the funds by concealing their origin and movement through forged requisition forms and payment vouchers purportedly signed by hospital staff.

The documents were allegedly used to facilitate payments for activities including immunisation outreaches, community dialogue meetings, palliative care services, and health inspection programmes.

However, the prosecution contends that several hospital officers whose names appeared on the payment documents neither signed the forms nor received the money.

The case remains under investigation as authorities pursue other suspects believed to have been involved in the alleged scheme.
