A newly constructed Kankoko Bridge in Kanungu District has collapsed just three weeks after it was commissioned, raising concerns over the quality of government-funded projects and raising pressure among the contractors.

The bridge, located in Kankoko River in Kanyashande Cell, Nyabirehe Parish, Kihembe Sub County, was constructed by Kanungu District Local Government at a cost of more than Shs40 million.

The infrastructure was expected to improve connectivity between Kihembe, Butogota, and Bwindi areas, but its collapse has disrupted transport and left residents demanding urgent government intervention.

Local leaders and residents have blamed the failure on alleged poor workmanship and the use of substandard materials.

Questions have also been raised over the supervision of the project by Kanungu District Superintendent of Works, Eng. January Silangi Mugaye, who oversaw the construction.

Kanyashande Cell LC1 Chairperson Baker Kusingura said the damaged bridge has affected movement, making it difficult for residents to access areas such as Butogota and Bwindi.

He called on authorities to act quickly and restore the important connection.

Kihembe Sub County LC3 Chairperson Denis Tumukunde accused district authorities of implementing the project without sufficient consultation with local leaders and residents.

He also raised concerns that the bridge was not built strongly enough to withstand heavy water flow during rainy seasons.

Kanungu District Councillor for Kihembe Sub County, Hon. Julius Tumugabirwe, warned that the damaged bridge could endanger residents and tourists travelling to Bwindi.

He urged authorities to restrict the use of the bridge and affected road section until safety measures are implemented.

Kanungu Deputy Resident District Commissioner Dr. Gad Rugaju Ahimbisibwe acknowledged the concerns and attributed the collapse to what he described as poor workmanship by the district engineering team.

Dr. Rugaju further emphasized the need for proper procedures, including community involvement and transparency during government projects.
