Prince Komwiswa Yoweri has emerged as a central figure in the growing dispute over who should succeed the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV as Omukama of Tooro.
According to a purported will signed by King Oyo in 2022, the late monarch named his biological son as the primary heir, while Komwiswa was listed as the next successor if the prince could not assume the throne.
Komwiswa is the son of Omusuga Charles Kamurasi Akiiki, head of the Babiito royal clan, and a grandson of former Omukama Sir George David Rukidi III.
The reported succession order then places Komwiswa’s brother, Prince Solomon Nyaika, followed by their father, Charles Kamurasi, if the earlier heirs are unable to take the throne.
The development comes as the Tooro royal family and Babiito clan remain divided over Oyo’s successor following his death on August 27, 2026, aged 34.
A 21-member Babiito committee has reportedly selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a former UBC news anchor, as its choice for the throne.
However, members of Oyo’s immediate family, including his sister Princess Ruth Komuntale, have rejected the announcement, arguing that the late king’s written succession arrangements should be respected.
Other names, including George Desmond Kamurasi, have also surfaced in the succession debate.
The purported will has therefore added another layer to an already contested process, with consultations continuing ahead of King Oyo’s burial on September 12.
