The late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV had already set out a succession plan nearly four years before his death, with his legally recognised biological sonnamed as the first heir to the Tooro throne.

Oyo signed his Last Will and Testament on September 14, 2022, at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal. The document was publicly presented on September 9, 2026, by his lawyer Michael Akampurira to members of the royal family and kingdom officials.

Under Article X, titled “Appointment of My Heir and Successor to the Crown,” Oyo stated that if he was survived by a son lawfully recognised as his biological son, that son would succeed him as Omukama.

The identity of the prince has not yet been publicly disclosed, although Tooro officials had earlier confirmed that Oyo left behind a young prince whose identity would be revealed according to tradition.

The will also provides a fallback line of succession if Oyo’s son dies before taking the throne, becomes permanently incapacitated or is otherwise unable to perform the duties of king.

The order names Prince Yoweri Komwiswa, son of Omusuga Charles Kamurasi, followed by Prince Solomon Nyaika, another son of Charles Kamurasi, and finally Charles Kamurasi himself.

The document further directs that succession should be conducted peacefully and with dignity, in accordance with Tooro customs and Uganda’s Institution of Traditional or Cultural Leaders Act, 2011, while Article XI provides for possible transitional arrangements including regency, guardianship and an advisory council.

Oyo also urged his successor to lead with wisdom, humility, justice, courage and compassion, describing the crown as a responsibility to the people rather than a source of personal power.

The will has now become central to the growing succession dispute after some Babiito members reportedly announced Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama.

However, Oyo’s sister Princess Ruth Komuntale has rejected that announcement, insisting that the late king’s will clearly places his son first in line.

With competing positions emerging within the royal establishment, the interpretation and implementation of Oyo’s written wishes are now at the centre of the battle over who will occupy the Tooro throne.
