Princess Ruth Komuntale, sister to the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV, has rejected the reported unveiling of Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the new Omukama of Tooro.
Speaking to journalists at Karuzika Palace on Wednesday night, Komuntale said the succession process had not been concluded and that the royal family had agreed to consult lawyers over King Oyo’s will before proclaiming a successor.
She said the family had met with Omusuga Charles Kamurasi and other members of the Babiito clan earlier in the day to review the late king’s will, making the announcement of Kijanangoma a surprise.
“Clearly, the next person in line is the son. That’s the next heir to the throne,” Komuntale said, referring to Oyo’s son.
According to Komuntale, Oyo’s will contained strict instructions on succession, including provisions for an alternative successor if the preferred heir could not take the throne.
She was accompanied by her aunt, Princess Elizabeth Bagaaya, as she appealed for calm and unity within the kingdom.
Komuntale said the family was preparing for another meeting with lawyers to examine the will before any successor is formally proclaimed.
Her remarks come after members of the Babiito clan reportedly announced Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma, a former Uganda Broadcasting Corporation journalist, as the new king.
The conflicting positions have now thrown the Tooro succession process into uncertainty less than two weeks after King Oyo died at the age of 34.
Komuntale urged Tooro subjects to remain peaceful, saying the ongoing dispute was preventing the royal family from mourning the late king in peace.
