Senior presidential adviser Gen. Salim Saleh has expressed optimism that Dr. Kizza Besigye’s case could be resolved within the next three to six months following discussions involving the detained opposition leader and his co-accused, Hajj Obeid Lutale.
Saleh, who heads Operation Wealth Creation (OWC) and is President Yoweri Museveni’s brother, made the remarks while addressing NRM parliamentary committee leaders in Kapeeka.
He revealed that he visited Besigye after learning that the opposition leader was ill, adding that Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba had tasked him with handling the matter.
Saleh’s remarks follow confirmation by ICT Minister Justine Lumumba in Parliament that discussions were underway involving Besigye and Lutale, raising hopes of progress in the case.

Besigye has been detained since November 2024 and faces treason charges. His continued detention has attracted public concern, particularly over his health and reports that he has required hospital treatment while in custody.
Saleh’s latest comments have drawn renewed attention to the high-level engagements surrounding the case, with observers waiting to see whether the discussions will lead to a breakthrough.
However, Saleh did not specify what outcome was being pursued or whether the engagements would result in Besigye’s release. His three-to-six-month estimate should therefore not be treated as a confirmed release date.
