Jazz Safari’s Tshaka Mayanja has called for greater care and protection of veteran musician Maddox Ssematimba, warning that Uganda risks losing another rare musical talent following the deaths of several celebrated musicians.

Mayanja made the remarks after meeting Maddox at the vigil of late Afrigo Band legend Moses Matovu, where he said he encouraged the singer to take better care of himself.

“Ggwe nno, tugenda kukusibira mu ppamba tukukweeke. We can’t afford to lose you,” Mayanja recalled telling Maddox.

Mayanja said Maddox also shared a personal experience he had recently gone through, which left him deeply concerned.

He also criticised what he described as programmes involving vloggers, YouTubers and bloggers that “desecrate musicians,” arguing that some have gone as far as attacking the legacy of established acts such as Afrigo Band.

Describing Maddox as “the Last of the Mohicans,” Mayanja said only a handful of musicians with his level of talent remain following the deaths of legends including Moses Matovu, Sammy Kasule and Ssenkebejje.

“Byonna mubyogere, tewali atuukiridde,” Mayanja added, acknowledging that nobody is perfect.

He concluded by calling for the preservation of Uganda’s live music culture, using the hashtags #GoodMusicUnitesHumanity and #KeepingLiveMusicAlive.
