The Masaka High Court has dismissed former NRM Minister Vincent Ssempijja’s petition challenging the election of NUP’s Yusuf Kiruruta Nkeretanyi as Kalungu East Member of Parliament.
In a ruling delivered by Justice Joyce Kavuma, the court found that Ssempijja had filed the petition outside the mandatory 30-day statutory deadline, leaving no legal basis for an extension.
Ssempijja, who contested the January 2026 parliamentary election, lost to Nkeretanyi by approximately 2,200 to 2,600 votes. He later challenged the results, citing alleged electoral irregularities and violence.
The former minister had previously secured a full recount of the votes. However, his subsequent election petition has now been dismissed on procedural grounds.
The ruling effectively upholds Nkeretanyi’s election as the duly elected MP for Kalungu East, approximately eight months after the election.
The court further directed each party to meet its own legal costs.
