  • Muhoozi Kainerugaba has openly declared his intention to contest for president in 2031.
  • Daudi Kabanda claims President Museveni has sanctioned Muhoozi’s presidential ambitions.
  • The announcement is expected to intensify debate over Uganda’s political succession.

Uganda’s political succession debate has taken another dramatic turn after Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba openly set the stage for his reported 2031 presidential ambitions.

The latest development comes after Kasambya County MP Daudi Kabanda claimed that President Yoweri Museveni has sanctioned Muhoozi’s bid to eventually succeed him.

Kabanda, a close ally of Muhoozi and head of the Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) Chairman’s Office, made the claims during a press conference at Muhoozi’s office in Nakasero on Tuesday.

The announcement comes days after Muhoozi himself publicly declared his intention to contest for president in 2031. On August 28, 2026, he said he expected to win with about 90% of the vote and indicated that he would have his father’s support.

Muhoozi previously stepped back from the 2026 presidential race and supported Museveni, who secured another term in office.

With the Muhoozi 2031 Presidential Bid now becoming an increasingly open political conversation, the PLU is likely to play a major role in shaping his future ambitions.

However, President Museveni has not publicly confirmed whether he plans to seek another term in 2031, making Kabanda’s claims likely to trigger fresh debate over Uganda’s political future.
