Former Butambala Member of Parliament and National Unity Platform (NUP) Vice President for Central Uganda, Muhammad Muwanga Kivumbi, has reportedly been taken away by armed men shortly after his release from detention on bail.

According to NUP spokesperson and Leader of the Opposition in Parliament, Joel Ssenyonyi, Kivumbi was intercepted at a military roadblock in the Mpigi area while travelling from Butambala to Kampala.

Ssenyonyi claims that armed security personnel stopped Kivumbi’s vehicle before taking him to an unknown location, raising fresh concerns among opposition supporters and human rights activists.

The reported incident comes just hours after the High Court granted Kivumbi bail of Shs10 million cash on July 9, following 169 days on remand over terrorism-related charges connected to the January 2026 post-election unrest in Butambala.

Kivumbi, who also serves as NUP’s deputy president for Central Uganda, had been welcomed by supporters after his release, only for reports of his alleged re-arrest to emerge later.

The development has triggered debate on social media, with many questioning whether the reported detention respects the court’s decision and highlighting ongoing tensions between security agencies and opposition figures in Uganda.

Authorities have not yet issued an official statement regarding the allegations, while more details are expected as inquiries into Kivumbi’s whereabouts continue.
