The Patriotic League of Uganda (PLU) has explained its protest against Turkey, with Secretary General Twalla Fadil demanding that Ugandan government critic Fred Lumbuye be returned to Uganda to face criminal charges.
Speaking to journalists during the demonstration in Kampala, Fadil questioned why Uganda would allegedly be targeted from Turkey, describing Uganda as a peaceful country.
“Today was about Lumbuye. You can’t attack our country, which is very peaceful, from Turkey. We want him to come back to Uganda to answer the criminal charges against him,” Fadil said.
The protest, reportedly linked to PLU chairman and Chief of Defence Forces Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, comes amid reported tensions between Uganda and Turkey.
One of the key issues cited by the group is Turkey’s alleged refusal to extradite Lumbuye, a vocal Ugandan government critic.
Other concerns reportedly include disagreements over Uganda’s involvement in peacekeeping operations in Somalia and questions surrounding Turkish business interests in Uganda.
However, police reportedly blocked the PLU protesters before they could reach the Turkish Embassy in Kampala.
The demonstration has brought renewed attention to Lumbuye’s case, Uganda-Turkey relations and the wider political concerns raised by the PLU leadership.
