Former Bugabula South MP Proscovia Salaamu Musumba has reportedly left Uganda and is processing an asylum application abroad amid the ongoing treason case involving opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye and his co-accused.
Musumba’s name reportedly appeared in an amended indictment relating to alleged meetings held outside Uganda, including in Geneva, Brussels and Greece. However, the former legislator has denied participating in the alleged meetings.
In her first public address since reportedly leaving the country, Musumba spoke about the fear and isolation she says she experienced for nearly a year after being linked to the case. She maintained her innocence, saying the situation had made her live as though she were guilty.
Asylum Application Yet To Be Confirmed
Although Musumba had previously dismissed suggestions that she intended to flee Uganda, reports now indicate that she is processing an asylum application in an undisclosed country.
Sources close to the People’s Front for Freedom (PFF) leader have reportedly shared details of the application, but Musumba has not publicly confirmed that she is seeking asylum or disclosed her current location.
The former legislator, who previously served in the NRM before joining the opposition through the Forum for Democratic Change (FDC), is now among the prominent PFF figures whose names have featured in discussions surrounding the Besigye case.
If confirmed, her departure would add to reports of opposition figures staying outside Uganda as the proceedings continue. Former Kiira Municipality MP Ibrahim Ssemujju Nganda has also been linked to the case.
The treason proceedings involving Besigye and his co-accused continue to attract political and public attention, particularly over the alleged overseas meetings and the claims surrounding opposition figures named in the case.
