High Court Judge Emmanuel Baguma has stood up and abruptly left the court during a tense session in the ongoing treason trial of opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye and co-accused Hajj Obeid Lutale.

The incident unfolded during a heated June 2026 hearing where defence lawyers raised strong objections over court procedure, alleged bias, and handling of the politically sensitive case. Besigye himself also reportedly challenged the court from the dock, questioning the legality of his detention and urging authorities to be transparent about the charges against him.

Tensions escalated inside the courtroom after the exchanges, prompting Justice Baguma to suddenly exit proceedings before the matter could be concluded. Viral clips circulating on social media show the judge leaving the courtroom as the session descended into disorder, with some users describing it as an abrupt walkout.

The case has been under intense public and legal scrutiny, with multiple petitions already filed before the Judicial Service Commission seeking Baguma’s removal over alleged bias, delays in handling defence applications, and perceived favouritism toward the prosecution.

The trial itself has remained one of Uganda’s most politically charged court battles, drawing consistent public attention and repeated courtroom confrontations between defence teams and the judiciary.

Despite the latest drama, proceedings resumed later with court setting July 3, 2026, for a bail application hearing and other procedural matters.
