Ugandan businessman and political commentator Frank Gashumba has launched a scathing attack on alleged corruption in Parliament, claiming he pays more than Shs3.6 billion in taxes every year only for public funds to be misused by corrupt officials.

Speaking during an interview on Radio 4, Gashumba said it is frustrating for hardworking taxpayers to contribute billions of shillings to the government while some public officials allegedly squander the money on lavish lifestyles.

“I pay over Shs3.6 billion in taxes every year, yet some people steal taxpayers’ money,” Gashumba said.

During the interview, Gashumba also made allegations against Chris Obore, the Director of Communications at Parliament, claiming taxpayer money had been used to build luxurious homes for his wives. He alleged the properties were so large that they resembled referral hospitals.

However, Gashumba did not present evidence to support the specific claims regarding the properties.

His comments come after Obore was recently charged alongside other individuals in connection with alleged corruption-related offences involving suspected financial losses running into billions of shillings. The accused were remanded as investigations continue.

Reacting to the ongoing case, Gashumba called on the Chief of Defence Forces, Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba, to ensure that those facing corruption charges are held accountable through the legal process. He also argued that corruption continues to deprive Ugandans of quality public services.
