A small number of African countries currently have no living former presidents or heads of state, a situation shaped by long-serving leaders, limited leadership transitions, and unique political histories.
From Uganda to Eritrea and South Sudan, each country has its own story explaining why no former national leader is still alive.
Uganda
Uganda is among the countries on the list. Since gaining independence in 1962, the country has had several presidents, but all former heads of state have passed away.
President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who has been in power since 1986, is currently the only living person to have served as Uganda’s President.
Cameroon
Cameroon has had only two presidents since independence in 1960. President Paul Biya has remained in office since 1982, while the country’s first president, Ahmadou Ahidjo, died in 1989.
Equatorial Guinea
Since gaining independence in 1968, Equatorial Guinea has had just two presidents.
Current President Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo seized power in 1979 after overthrowing his uncle, Francisco Macías Nguema, who was later executed.
South Sudan
Africa’s youngest nation has had only one president since independence in 2011.
President Salva Kiir has led the country since its formation, meaning there are no former presidents.
Eritrea
Eritrea has also had only one president throughout its history.
President Isaias Afwerki has remained in office since the country gained independence in 1993.
Zambia
Despite having seven presidents and one acting president since independence in 1964, Zambia now has no living former heads of state.
Former President Edgar Lungu died in June 2025, while former Acting President Guy Scott passed away on July 15, 2026, leaving President Hakainde Hichilema without any living predecessors.
Republic of Congo (Congo-Brazzaville)
President Denis Sassou Nguesso, who returned to power in 1997 after previously serving from 1979 to 1992, has outlived all former presidents of the country.
Togo
President Faure Gnassingbé assumed office following the death of his father, Gnassingbé Eyadéma, in 2005.
All previous heads of state have since died.
Djibouti
Djibouti has had only two presidents since independence in 1977.
Current President Ismaïl Omar Guelleh has served since 1999, while his predecessor, Hassan Gouled Aptidon, died in 2006.
Eswatini
Unlike the other countries on the list, Eswatini is a constitutional monarchy and has no president.
King Mswati III has ruled since 1986, and there are no living former monarchs. The country’s government is headed by Prime Minister Russell Mmiso Dlamini.
Why It Matters
Political analysts note that living former leaders can provide valuable institutional memory, diplomatic experience, and guidance during times of national crisis.
On the other hand, former heads of state can also become powerful political rivals, influence succession battles, create divisions within ruling parties, and increase the financial burden on governments through state benefits and security arrangements.
As Africa’s political landscape continues to evolve, these countries remain unique examples where history, longevity in office, or limited leadership transitions have resulted in no living former presidents or heads of state.
