Tanzania has been plunged into mourning following the death of Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s First Gentleman.
Hassan reportedly passed away at 8:00am on Monday, September 7, 2026, at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar, following a battle with a heart condition.
The heartbreaking news was officially announced by Tanzanian Vice President Deogratius Ndejembi, who conveyed condolences to President Samia, the bereaved family and the people of Tanzania.
Hafidh, an agriculturalist, had been married to President Samia since 1978, with the couple sharing nearly five decades of marriage.
Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where family members, government officials and mourners are expected to gather to pay their final respects.
His death marks a devastating personal loss for President Samia Suluhu Hassan and a moment of national mourning for Tanzania.
