General (Rtd) Moses Ali, one of Uganda’s longest-serving politicians and military figures, passed away on July 17, 2026, at the age of 87, leaving behind a remarkable legacy spanning more than five decades in Uganda’s military and political history.
Born on April 5, 1939, in Atabo Parish, present-day Adjumani District, Moses Ali began his career as a primary school teacher before joining the Uganda Army as a cadet officer in 1968. He later received specialised military training in Israel and the United Kingdom, rising through the ranks to become one of Uganda’s most influential military officers.
FROM SOLDIER TO GOVERNMENT LEADER
By 1971, Moses Ali had attained the rank of Colonel and became part of the military officers who participated in the coup that brought Idi Amin to power.
During Amin’s government, he rose to the rank of Brigadier and served in key government positions, including Minister of Provincial Administration and later Minister of Finance in 1975.
Following the fall of Amin’s regime in 1979, Ali went into exile in Sudan, where he founded and led the Uganda National Rescue Front (UNRF), a rebel movement based mainly in the West Nile region.

RETURN TO POLITICS AND MUSEVENI GOVERNMENT
In 1986, Moses Ali signed a peace agreement with President Yoweri Museveni’s government, marking his return to Uganda’s political scene.
He later pursued legal education, earning a Bachelor of Laws degree and becoming a qualified advocate, adding another chapter to his already diverse career.
Under President Museveni’s administration, Gen. Moses Ali became a key political figure, serving in several senior government positions, including:
- Second Deputy Prime Minister of Uganda
- First Deputy Prime Minister
- Third Deputy Prime Minister
- Minister of Finance
- Minister of Internal Affairs
He also represented Adjumani West/East Moyo County in Parliament for many years, becoming one of Uganda’s longest-serving legislators.
A MILITARY ICON AND POLITICAL SURVIVOR
Moses Ali was promoted to Lieutenant General in 2001 and later attained the rank of a four-star General in the Uganda People’s Defence Force (UPDF).
Known by many as the “Lion of Adjumani,” he was admired for his resilience, political influence, and ability to remain relevant through different political eras — from Idi Amin’s government to the modern NRM administration.

HIS ENDURING LEGACY
Gen. Moses Ali will be remembered as a soldier, lawyer, politician, and statesman whose life reflected Uganda’s complex political journey.
From humble beginnings as a teacher to becoming one of the country’s most powerful leaders, his story remains one of survival, transformation, and decades of public service.
