Newly elected Kampala Lord Mayor Ronald Balimwezo Nsubuga has stirred political discussion after expressing his willingness to work with President Yoweri Museveni‘s National Resistance Movement (NRM) government while outlining the standards he expects in his office.

Speaking during an interview on online platform Bbeg TV, the National Unity Platform (NUP) politician said cooperation with the central government is essential if Kampala is to address its infrastructure and service delivery challenges.

According to Balimwezo, political differences should not stand in the way of development, noting that collaboration between City Hall and the central government is necessary to improve services for Kampala residents.

The Lord Mayor-elect also attracted attention after stating that “foot soldiers” with dreadlocks would not be allowed in his office.

Balimwezo said he wants his office to maintain professionalism and remain focused on serving the people of Kampala rather than becoming a gathering place for individuals he believes could disrupt official work.

His remarks have since generated mixed reactions on social media, with some praising what they describe as a practical approach to governance, while others argue that the comments unfairly single out a section of NUP’s grassroots supporters.

The statements underscore the challenges opposition leaders face in balancing political differences with the need to work alongside a central government led by the NRM to deliver public services.

As of publication, the National Unity Platform had not issued an official response to Balimwezo’s remarks. Further developments are expected as the debate continues.
