The Katikkiro of Buganda, Charles Peter Mayiga, has called on the government to intensify the fight against corruption, saying meaningful progress can only be achieved if the campaign begins with powerful officials occupying the country’s highest offices.
Mayiga made the remarks on Tuesday, July 7, 2026, while hosting a high-level delegation from the Central Government at Bulange. The delegation, sent by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, was led by Vice President Jessica Alupo, whom the Katikkiro warmly referred to as “Namakula,” and included several Cabinet ministers.
During the meeting, Mayiga reaffirmed the Buganda Kingdom’s commitment to working closely with the Central Government in promoting development across key sectors, including health, education, agriculture, financial literacy, and environmental conservation.
However, he cautioned that corruption continues to undermine national progress by allowing unqualified individuals to occupy critical public offices.
“The fight against corruption should start with the big shots in high offices. Corruption has allowed incompetent people to occupy important positions, leading to poor service delivery,” Mayiga said.

The Katikkiro also challenged the government to invest more heavily in modern public transport infrastructure, arguing that an efficient railway system would lower transport costs, improve productivity, and stimulate economic growth.
He envisioned a future where commuters could travel from Mityana to Kampala by train in just 20 minutes, describing such investments as essential to transforming Uganda’s economy.
Mayiga concluded by expressing optimism that stronger collaboration between the Buganda Kingdom and the Central Government would accelerate sustainable development and improve the livelihoods of Ugandans.
