Buganda Kingdom Katikkiro Charles Peter Mayiga has appealed for calm, unity, and tolerance after visiting the family of former Kampala Lord Mayor and senior lawyer Erias Lukwago, who is currently on remand at Luzira Prison.

Mayiga paid the visit on Wednesday, July 1, to offer comfort and solidarity to Lukwago’s family following his recent arrest on charges of misprision of treason in connection with an alleged plot to overthrow the government.

Addressing the family in Luganda, the Katikkiro acknowledged that Uganda is experiencing a difficult political moment but encouraged citizens not to lose hope.

“The situation is challenging and deeply concerning, but we must remain strong. We shall overcome these difficult times,” Mayiga said.

He also urged Ugandans to embrace peaceful coexistence despite political differences, emphasizing that there is room for everyone in the country.

In a strong show of support, Mayiga described Lukwago as “a true man of the Kabaka,” reaffirming that the Buganda Kingdom stands with him during what he called a difficult period.

The Katikkiro’s visit comes at a time of heightened political tensions following Lukwago’s arrest, with opposition leaders, supporters, and human rights advocates continuing to call for due process and a fair hearing as the case moves through the courts.
