“Free Anita Among Before It’s Too Late” – Teso Parliamentary Group Appeals to President Museveni

The Teso Parliamentary Group has heartfully appealed to President Yoweri Museveni to consider easing restrictions placed on former Speaker of Parliament and NRM Second Vice Chairperson Anita Annet Among, citing concerns over her deteriorating health.

According to the legislators, Among is reportedly battling serious health complications, including a blood clot, alongside emotional distress and financial strain following the freezing of her bank accounts. They argue that her prolonged confinement at her Nakasero residence has further worsened her condition.

Weeks Under House Confinement

Among has reportedly remained under restricted movement at her Nakasero home since she stepped aside from the race for Speaker of the 12th Parliament in May 2026.

Her withdrawal came after security agencies carried out coordinated raids on several of her properties as part of ongoing corruption and unexplained wealth investigations. Since then, restrictions on her movements have remained in place as investigations continue.

MPs Call for Medical Intervention

Following a visit to the former Speaker, members of the Teso Parliamentary Group urged the President to allow her access to specialized medical treatment, insisting that the situation requires humanitarian consideration.

The MPs maintained that while investigations should proceed, her health condition should not be compromised, calling for a balance between justice and compassion.

Public Reaction Divided

The appeal has sparked mixed reactions across social media and political circles. While some Ugandans support the call for humane treatment, others argue that similar considerations are not always extended to other political detainees and suspects facing prolonged legal processes.
