“We Need Prayers” – Sseggona Gives Disturbing Update on Erias Lukwago’s Health

Lawyers representing jailed opposition politician and former Kampala Lord Mayor Erias Lukwago have revealed that he remains admitted at Mulago National Referral Hospital, where doctors are carrying out extensive medical investigations to establish the cause of his worsening condition.

Speaking after visiting Lukwago on Friday, his lawyer Medard Lubega Sseggona said several medical tests had been conducted, but the results were still pending.

“A number of tests have been conducted, and we hadn’t received the results by the time I left earlier this afternoon,” Sseggona said.

According to Sseggona, Lukwago is in severe pain, particularly around the area where he previously underwent surgery in India. He added that the opposition leader remains physically weak and requires continued medical attention.

“He is in pain. He is weak. We need prayers. The doctors and experts at Mulago have done a wonderful job. They are managing the situation to the best of their ability,” Sseggona said.

Lukwago was transferred to Mulago National Referral Hospital from Luzira Prison following a court order directing prison authorities to provide him with specialized medical treatment after reports that his chronic health conditions had deteriorated during detention.

The former Kampala Lord Mayor has been in military detention since mid-June 2026 after being charged with misprision of treason, following allegations that he attempted to serve legal documents on Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba.

His reported health complications including hypertension, spinal problems, breathing difficulties, and persistent pain have intensified public concern over his condition and reignited debate surrounding his detention.

Lukwago, a senior opposition lawyer and legal counsel to detained politician Dr. Kizza Besigye, remains under medical care as Ugandans await the outcome of the ongoing investigations into his illness.
