British-Ugandan singer-songwriter Michael Kiwanuka has revealed that he suffered a severe stroke several months ago, forcing him to cancel performances as he continues a lengthy rehabilitation journey.

The 39-year-old Mercury Prize-winning musician shared the emotional update on Instagram on September 23, 2026, while announcing his upcoming fifth studio album, Fudge.

Kiwanuka explained that the stroke was caused by a bleed in his brain linked to high blood pressure. He described the resulting brain injury as severe and said he still has extensive rehabilitation ahead of him.

The health crisis also forced the acclaimed singer to miss recent US performances where he was scheduled to support Mumford & Sons.

“It’s a long journey recovering from a stroke,” Kiwanuka said, explaining that he is not yet certain when he will return to the road or what touring will look like when he does.

Despite the difficult period, the singer-songwriter said he feels he is making progress and remains focused on getting better.

The announcement came alongside news that his fifth album, Fudge, has been completed. The album was recorded before his stroke and marks an important new chapter for the musician as he continues his recovery.

Kiwanuka also expressed gratitude to NHS medical staff and other healthcare professionals who have cared for him, as well as his family, friends and team for supporting him through the difficult period.

The London-born musician, whose music includes hits such as Home Again and Cold Little Heart, won the Mercury Prize in 2020 for his self-titled third album, Kiwanuka.

For now, Kiwanuka says his focus remains on recovery, with further details about Fudge expected as he works toward returning to music and, eventually, the stage.
