Chief of Defence Forces Gen. Muhoozi Kainerugaba has described Uganda as a transformed nation, saying the country has moved from its turbulent past to become a constitutional democracy committed to peace and international cooperation.
Muhoozi made the remarks on Saturday, August 2, 2026, during the unveiling of a memorial honouring Yoni Netanyahu at the Old Entebbe Airport terminal.
The site is historically associated with the 1976 Entebbe hostage rescue operation, during which Israeli commandos carried out a daring raid to free passengers held hostage after the hijacking of an Air France flight.
During his speech, Gen. Muhoozi reflected on Uganda under former President Idi Amin, contrasting that period with what he described as the country’s current political and diplomatic direction.
“Today, Uganda is a constitutional democracy committed to peaceful coexistence and constructive engagement with the international community,” Muhoozi said.
He said Uganda continues to strengthen peaceful relations with countries around the world, including Israel.
The memorial ceremony brought together Ugandan and Israeli officials, alongside other guests, to commemorate the events of 1976 while highlighting the evolving relationship between the two countries.
