The High Court has ordered Commissioner General of Prisons Dr. Johnson Byabashaija to work closely with Mulago National Referral Hospital to assess whether jailed opposition leader Dr. Kizza Besigye is medically fit to stand trial on treason charges.
The directive follows Besigye’s dramatic collapse in court on July 29, 2026, during proceedings that were dominated by disagreements over his legal representation. The incident sparked renewed concern over his health and the conditions under which he is being held.
Presiding Judge Justice Emmanuel Baguma adjourned the case to August 18, 2026, after receiving an initial medical report from prison authorities confirming that Besigye had been admitted to Mulago Hospital for treatment.
Footage from the courtroom captured the tense atmosphere as officials continued proceedings in one of Uganda’s most closely watched political cases. Besigye and his co-accused have remained in detention since November 2024, with the case continuing to fuel debate over fair trial rights, access to medical care, and the treatment of political detainees.
The upcoming medical assessment is expected to play a crucial role in determining whether the veteran opposition figure can proceed with the trial when the court reconvenes later this month.
