The National Drug Authority (NDA) is worried and has advised men to know their correct condom size before purchasing, warning that poorly fitting condoms can increase the risk of breakage or slipping during use.
The authority made the recommendation while appearing before Parliament’s Committee on Commissions, Statutory Authorities and State Enterprises (COSASE) to discuss its work plan.
According to the NDA, using a properly fitting condom is important for improving its effectiveness and reducing the chances of breakage or slippage during sexual intercourse.
The advice comes amid longstanding concerns about condom fit in Uganda. Health authorities have previously highlighted the importance of proper fitting, while government programmes have explored different condom options to meet the needs of different users.
Uganda has also previously witnessed calls for larger condom sizes, including parliamentary discussions in 2014 over concerns that a one-size-fits-all approach may not adequately serve everyone.
The latest guidance from the NDA therefore puts the focus on an often-overlooked part of condom use: knowing the correct size before making a purchase.
