A security debate has broken out after Bukedea County MP Hon. Okwere challenged security agencies to investigate how Turkey-based political activist and blogger Fred Lumbuye manages to obtain sensitive government information before many officials within Uganda.
Okwere raised concern over what he described as a worrying information gap, arguing that some of Lumbuye’s reports appear to emerge ahead of information reaching people who are physically within the country.
According to the legislator, the issue should not simply be dismissed as social media speculation, but investigated to establish whether there are security loopholes allowing sensitive information to leak from government institutions.
Okwere reportedly expressed surprise at the speed with which Lumbuye releases information concerning developments inside Uganda.
He questioned how a person based in Turkey can allegedly obtain information about events within State House and other government departments before some Ugandans and officials on the ground are aware of them.
The MP warned that if sensitive government information is indeed reaching external actors through unauthorised channels, it could create serious security risks.
He further argued that such loopholes could potentially expose the country’s leadership and national institutions to danger.
Okwere pointed to reports previously circulated by Lumbuye concerning the health of the First Lady as an example of why he believes security agencies should investigate the source of the blogger’s information.
Weeks ago, Lumbuye reportedly claimed that the First Lady had fallen into a coma and had been transported to the United States through West Africa for medical attention.
Those claims later generated significant public debate, particularly after subsequent developments appeared to align with parts of the reports.
However, the exact source of Lumbuye’s information remains unclear, and the claims should not automatically be interpreted as proof that he has access to State House or government insiders.
Okwere’s concerns now place the spotlight on Uganda’s information-security systems and the possibility of unauthorised leaks from government institutions.
The MP wants security agencies to establish whether Lumbuye has genuine sources within government, whether information is being leaked through compromised systems or individuals, or whether his reports are obtained through other means.

For Okwere, however, the bigger question remains unanswered: How does someone thousands of kilometres away appear to know about certain developments before people inside Uganda do?
