Security has been heavily tightened at Karuziika Palace in Fort Portal ahead of the burial of the late Omukama Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Uganda Police and the Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) have ordered non-residents and other unauthorised persons to leave the palace grounds as they conduct a sweeping security operation.
Everyone seeking access to the palace is now required to undergo security clearance before being allowed through the gates, according to a source familiar with the arrangements.
The heightened security reportedly follows a morning visit by Inspector General of Police Abas Byakagaba, during which security loopholes were identified and measures taken to address them.
Mourners already at the palace have also been redirected as authorities reorganise movement and tighten access controls.
The operation comes ahead of Oyo’s September 12 burial at Karambi Royal Tombs. The late King died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, with his body currently at Karuziika Palace for public viewing.
Thousands of mourners, royal family members, government officials and dignitaries are expected in Fort Portal, prompting heightened security to manage crowds and guard against potential threats.
