Court proceedings involving opposition politician Dr. Kizza Besigye were abruptly suspended after he collapsed during a hearing before Justice Emmanuel Baguma as he was shouting.

Besigye, who is facing charges alongside two co-accused, strongly objected to the appointment of state-provided lawyers, arguing that they lacked the experience required to handle a case of such seriousness.

According to reports, the prosecution had just begun presenting its first witness when Besigye repeatedly protested the legal representation offered to him.

Moments later, he reportedly collapsed after several minutes of raising his objections in court, prompting prison officers to call for an ambulance.

The hearing was immediately suspended to allow him to be taken to hospital for medical attention.

The hearing also came against the backdrop of newly introduced court guidelines that reportedly limited access for members of the media and the general public.

The restrictions have attracted criticism from opposition leaders and civil society activists, who argue that they undermine transparency and the principle of open justice in high-profile cases.

Besigye’s latest court appearance adds another chapter to his long-running legal battles, which continue to attract significant public and political attention.
