Uganda Human Rights Commission (UHRC) Chairperson Mariam Fauzat Wangadya is expected to appear before Parliament’s Public Accounts Committee (PAC) to answer questions over allegations of financial mismanagement at the Commission just days after resigning.
The committee is set to quiz Wangadya over claims that public funds may have been mismanaged during her tenure, as Parliament steps up its oversight of government institutions and public expenditure.
The summons comes just days after Wangadya announced that she had resigned from her position, citing internal challenges and irregularities within the Commission. However, Attorney General Sam Mayanja later clarified that her resignation has not yet taken effect, explaining that it is still awaiting formal acceptance by President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni, who appointed her.
The PAC session is expected to provide lawmakers with an opportunity to seek explanations over the Commission’s financial management and establish the current state of affairs at the constitutional body.
The outcome of the hearing could also shape the ongoing discussion surrounding Wangadya’s leadership and the future of the Uganda Human Rights Commission.
