The Uganda People’s Defence Forces (UPDF) has announced a major leadership change within the elite Special Forces Command (SFC), with Brig Gen Asaph Mweteise Nyakikuru appointed as the acting commander of the unit.
The appointment was made by Chief of Defence Forces (CDF) and Senior Presidential Advisor for Special Operations, Gen Muhoozi Kainerugaba, and takes immediate effect.
Alongside his new assignment, Brig Gen Nyakikuru has also been promoted to the acting rank of Major General.
Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru takes over from Maj Gen David Mugisha, who is set to leave the SFC command to pursue advanced strategic security studies at the National Defence College (NDC) abroad.
According to the UPDF, Mugisha will undertake the course in the coming months as part of his continued professional military development.
The army commended Mugisha for his service and leadership during his tenure at the helm of the Special Forces Command, thanking him for his contribution to the elite unit.
The UPDF also wished him success as he embarks on his studies.
The military congratulated Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru on his appointment and expressed confidence in his ability to lead the Special Forces Command.
His appointment places him at the helm of one of Uganda’s most specialised military formations, responsible for carrying out sensitive and high-level security operations.
The UPDF said Nyakikuru has been entrusted with the responsibility at a time when the force continues to strengthen its command structures and operational capabilities.
The leadership changes were announced by Col Chris Magezi, Acting Director of Defence Public Information at the Ministry of Defence and Veteran Affairs (MODVA)/UPDF.
With the changes taking immediate effect, Acting Maj Gen Nyakikuru now assumes command of the SFC as Maj Gen Mugisha prepares for his next assignment abroad.
