Deputy Speaker of Parliament Thomas Tayebwa has criticised Ugandans who leave the country for Western nations to avoid legal proceedings, saying some choose to seek sympathy and financial support abroad instead of facing the justice system at home.
Speaking during an exclusive interview with UBC, the Ruhinda North MP said law-abiding citizens should have confidence in Uganda’s courts, arguing that an arrest does not deny anyone the right to a fair hearing.
Tayebwa said Ugandans who believe in the rule of law understand that being arrested is part of the legal process and does not automatically amount to guilt.
“Some people prefer to run to the West, seeking sympathy and funding. Those who remain in Uganda and follow the law know that even if they are arrested, they will ultimately appear before a court of law,” Tayebwa said.
He added that every person arrested is entitled to appear before a competent court where their case can be heard and determined in accordance with the law.
The Deputy Speaker’s comments come amid heightened political tensions following the 2026 general elections, during which several opposition politicians and activists have faced arrests, prolonged detention, and court proceedings.
His remarks are expected to fuel further debate over Uganda’s justice system and the government’s handling of political dissent.
Supporters of the government’s position argue that all citizens should respect legal processes and allow the courts to determine their cases.
