Uganda Police have temporarily paused the daily mass impoundment phase of Operation Ganyegenya, the 100-day crackdown targeting dangerous and unroadworthy commuter taxis across Greater Kampala.
The operation, launched in late August 2026, saw 178 commuter taxis impounded on its first day over various road safety violations.
Police spokesperson Michael Kananura said the temporary pause was mainly caused by limited space to accommodate the growing number of impounded vehicles.
“It would have been a challenge to continue impounding vehicles every day when we don’t have space to put them, because there are very many,” Kananura explained.
Police will now impound vehicles in batches, conduct inspections, release compliant vehicles and then resume enforcement exercises.
“Ganyegenya” exercise intends to stop unsafe Taxis before their defects cause tragedy.
STATISTIC: So far, 179 of the 182 taxis impounded [98.4%] were classified as DMCs, within the Kampala Metropolitan Area in the past few days!
