President Yoweri Museveni has directed Ugandan authorities to accelerate preparations for the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), warning that key infrastructure must meet international standards ahead of the tournament.
Museveni issued the directive on Tuesday at State House Entebbe after receiving a briefing from CAF Secretary General Samson Adamu and Uganda’s National AFCON Task Force, led by Prime Minister Robinah Nabbanja.
Uganda will co-host the tournament with Kenya and Tanzania in June and July 2027, marking the first time the three East African countries will jointly stage the continental football competition.
The President instructed relevant institutions to speed up the construction and upgrading of stadiums, training facilities, roads, airport infrastructure and accommodation, particularly in upcountry host cities.
Uganda is expected to welcome football teams, officials and thousands of fans from across Africa during the tournament.
Museveni also revealed plans to engage his Kenyan and Tanzanian counterparts over the introduction of a single visa arrangement for AFCON 2027.
The proposed arrangement would ease cross-border movement for teams, officials and supporters travelling between the three host countries.
The initiative is expected to strengthen regional cooperation and simplify travel during East Africa’s first joint hosting of the continental tournament.
