Fresh details have emerged in the Tooro succession dispute after the Attorney General reportedly advised President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni that the late King Oyo’s will should take first precedence in determining his successor.
According to a letter dated September 12, 2026, the advice was issued after Museveni sought legal guidance following Oyo’s death in August.
The Attorney General reportedly stated that Oyo’s expressed wishes on succession should be considered before alternative arrangements are made and that the will should stand unless successfully challenged in court.
The development comes amid a dispute between the Babiito royal clan and members of Oyo’s immediate family.
The Babiito succession committee selected Prince Edward Rukidi Kijanangoma as the next Omukama, while Oyo’s family has pointed to his 2022 will, which reportedly names his biological son as the preferred heir.
The Attorney General’s reported position could therefore add a major legal dimension to the succession battle.
The letter also reportedly called for the suspension of some traditional succession rituals, including the throwing of coffee beans into the grave, as legal and traditional consultations continue.
