Police in Iganga, working jointly with the UPDF Defence Intelligence Security (DIS) unit, have arrested six suspects believed to be part of a criminal network impersonating President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni and members of his family to defraud members of the public.
The suspects were arrested on July 2, 2026, at around 12:00 p.m. during an intelligence-led operation conducted in Nakigo Sub-county, Iganga District.
Authorities say the group allegedly used fake identities, including impersonations of the President and his daughter Natasha Karugire Museveni, to run fraudulent schemes targeting unsuspecting victims across the country.
During the operation, security forces recovered nine mobile phones believed to have been used in coordinating the scams. Preliminary findings reportedly revealed multiple fraudulent social media accounts and mobile money platforms linked to the suspects, including a fake “Youth Development Application Fund.”
Police further stated that during interrogation, the suspects allegedly admitted to operating several fake accounts used to facilitate the fraudulent activities.
The suspects, all residents of Nandekula A Village in Bulubandi Parish, Nakigo Sub-county, include Mugudya Mustafa (17), Maganda Murishidi (18), Waiswa Muhammad (21), Kaima Jamiru (17), Mulawa Shafick (17), and Ngobi Sabath (15).
They have since been transferred to Jinja Road Police Station for further investigations and legal processing.
Busoga East Regional Police spokesperson ASP Kasadha Michael confirmed the arrests, noting that investigations are ongoing.
