Minister of Local Government Balaam Barugahara Ateenyi has issued a stern warning to underperforming district officials, declaring that those who fail to deliver services to Ugandans risk being referred directly to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.

Speaking on NBS Television’s Morning Breeze on Wednesday, July 1, 2026, Balaam used colorful rhetoric to emphasize his determination to crack down on negligence, poor service delivery, and corruption in local governments.

“I’ll Put You in a Drone”

In one of the interview’s most talked-about moments, the minister warned district leaders that he would not tolerate officials who fail to perform their duties.

“If I go to your district and find that people are not doing their job, I will put them in a drone and take them to the State House Anti-Corruption Unit.”

Although the statement was widely understood as rhetorical rather than literal, it underscored Balaam’s message that officials found neglecting their responsibilities would face swift action.

Tough Stance on Accountability

Since assuming office, Balaam has repeatedly pledged to improve accountability across local governments, arguing that citizens deserve efficient public services and responsive leadership.

His latest warning forms part of a broader campaign aimed at strengthening performance at district level and addressing persistent complaints about inefficiency and poor service delivery.

Focus on Local Government Performance

The minister has also indicated that his ministry will closely monitor the performance of Chief Administrative Officers (CAOs) and other district officials, insisting that public servants must be held accountable for how they execute government programmes.

His remarks come as government intensifies efforts to combat corruption and improve service delivery across the country, with local governments remaining a key focus due to longstanding concerns over delays, mismanagement, and inefficiency.
