Ugandan music heavyweight Jose Chameleone has once again proved why he remains one of East Africa’s most influential artists after receiving a special honour at the prestigious Bongo Flava Honors concert held in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The legendary singer made history on Friday night at The Dome, Masaki, becoming the first non-Tanzanian artiste to headline the annual celebration since its launch, a move that cemented his status as a regional music powerhouse.

Thousands of fans gathered for the highly anticipated event as Chameleone delivered a powerful live performance that reminded audiences why he has remained a dominant force in African music for decades.

The “Baliwa” hitmaker’s appearance was celebrated as a major moment for Uganda, with fans praising him for continuing to carry the country’s flag beyond borders.

His recognition came as a result of his immense contribution to East Africa’s entertainment industry, having influenced generations of musicians across Uganda, Tanzania and the wider region.

The Bongo Flava Honors concert was founded by Tanzanian hip-hop pioneer and politician Joseph Mbilinyi, popularly known as Sugu (formerly Mr II), to celebrate artistes whose work has shaped the region’s music culture.

Unlike many modern concerts that heavily depend on playback, the event is known for its authentic live band performances, allowing fans to experience legendary songs in their original musical form.

Over the years, the platform has honoured some of Tanzania’s biggest music names, including Lady Jaydee, Professor Jay, TID, Mr Nice, Juma Nature and Matonya.

For Jose Chameleone, the latest honour adds another chapter to a career that has seen him become one of Uganda’s biggest musical exports.

From dominating the East African charts to influencing upcoming artistes, Chameleone’s recognition in Tanzania further highlights the deep connection between Ugandan and Tanzanian music cultures.

The achievement also reinforces his reputation as one of the few Ugandan musicians whose influence continues to extend across the continent.
