King David Junior School in Ndejje has announced a two-week closure following the devastating bus accident in Kapchorwa District that claimed the lives of 19 people, including 18 pupils and one adult.

The temporary closure was confirmed by Makindye Ssabagabo Resident District Commissioner (RDC) Simon Peter Mawerere, who said the decision was taken to allow the school community to mourn the victims and support the bereaved families during this difficult period.

The tragedy occurred on July 16, 2026, when the school’s bus, registration UA 108BQ, was transporting pupils back from an educational trip to Sipi Falls in Kapchorwa District.

According to preliminary findings, the bus is suspected to have developed a mechanical failure before crashing. Several other passengers sustained injuries and were rushed to nearby health facilities for treatment.

Police have since launched investigations to establish the exact cause of the accident, with mechanical failure currently forming one of the key lines of inquiry.

The heartbreaking incident has sent shockwaves across Uganda, prompting an outpouring of grief from government leaders, education stakeholders, parents, and members of the public.
