Queen Mother Best Kemigisa has revealed that the late King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV deliberately kept his illness private, with even the Tooro Kingdom’s Prime Minister reportedly unaware of his medical condition.
Speaking during the late monarch’s farewell service at St. John’s Cathedral in Fort Portal on Saturday, September 12, 2026, Kemigisa said Oyo personally instructed the Omuhikirwa, Prime Minister Calvin Armstrong Rwomiire Akiiki, to tell the Kingdom that he was in the United States for official work and studies.
“It is also true that the Omuhikirwa (Prime Minister) was not aware of the King’s medical condition. The King wished to maintain his medical condition private and had personally directed the Omuhikirwa to inform the Kingdom that he was on a working visit to the U.S. and was also studying,” Kemigisa said.
The revelation offers fresh insight into the secrecy surrounding Oyo’s health during his prolonged absence from the Tooro Kingdom.
The late King died on August 27, 2026, aged 34, after battling aggressive angiosarcoma and receiving treatment abroad.
According to the Queen Mother, Oyo wanted his medical condition kept away from public attention, while his Prime Minister communicated the explanation that he was in the United States for work and studies.
Oyo’s death has since plunged the Tooro Kingdom into mourning, while his succession has become a subject of intense discussion within the royal family and the Babiito clan.
The late monarch was enthroned in 1995 at the age of three following the death of his father, Omukama Patrick Matthew Kaboyo Olimi III. He went on to become one of the longest-serving monarchs in Tooro.

Following the farewell service at St. John’s Cathedral, his body was taken to the Karambi Royal Tombs for burial.
