Police in Nakaseke District have arrested 22 people after intercepting a taxi allegedly carrying hunting equipment, suspected wildlife products and wild meat.

The suspects were arrested on Monday, August 17, 2026, at around 11:00 p.m. after officers manning a snap checkpoint stopped a white Toyota Hiace taxi, registration number UAV 523K.

According to police, the vehicle was carrying the 22 occupants together with several items suspected to be connected to illegal hunting and possession of wildlife products.

Among the items recovered were hunting nets, spears, pangas, knives, roots and leaves of unidentified species, smoked and fresh suspected wild meat, three pairs of oribi horns, five bushbuck horns and porcupine quills.

The suspects were arrested and detained as investigations continue.

Police said the group will be transferred to the Uganda Wildlife Authority (UWA) for further management and appropriate action.

The arrest comes amid ongoing concerns over illegal hunting and the movement of wildlife products, which pose a threat to Uganda’s wildlife and biodiversity.
