Tooro Kingdom has selected Prince Rukidi Edward Kijanangoma as the next Omukama following the death of King Oyo Nyimba Kabamba Iguru Rukidi IV.
Kijanangoma is the son of the late Prince Christopher Kijanangoma and grandson of former Tooro King George David Rukidi III.
The new Omukama is also known for his media career, having worked as a news anchor at Uganda Broadcasting Corporation (UBC).
According to reports, the Tooro Kingdom succession committee selected Kijanangoma after consultations involving 19 of its 21 members, paving the way for a new reign following Oyo’s death at the age of 34.
However, the succession announcement has already sparked debate within the royal family. Princess Ruth Komuntale reportedly described the announcement as dramatic and unconfirmed, while supporters of Kijanangoma have argued that Tooro needs an adult leader during the transition.
King Oyo, who ascended the throne at just three years old and reigned for nearly 31 years, reportedly left instructions in his will that his son should succeed him, followed by other princes if necessary.
Further consultations and meetings are expected ahead of King Oyo’s burial on Saturday.
