Four members of Uganda’s national boxing team, the Bombers, reportedly disappeared in the United Kingdom shortly after the 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, with speculations of looking for greener pastures.
The missing athletes have been identified as team captain Nuhu Batte, Emily Nakalema, Ibrahim Kemis and Angel Katushabe.
Uganda sent a six-member boxing team to the Games, meaning the four athletes reportedly unaccounted for make up the majority of the squad.
The disappearance was reportedly discovered ahead of the team’s scheduled return to Uganda on Tuesday.
According to reports, Police Scotland has confirmed that it is investigating cases involving several athletes who remain unaccounted for following the Games.
Authorities are reportedly working with the UK Home Office as inquiries continue into the whereabouts of the athletes.
Media reports have also claimed that one of the Ugandan boxers told a broadcaster that they intend to seek asylum in the United Kingdom.
However, the circumstances surrounding the reported disappearance and the individual intentions of the athletes remain subject to ongoing investigations.
Uganda’s boxing campaign in Glasgow ended with several early eliminations.
The team’s campaign also attracted attention after heavyweight boxer Aziz Abdul, popularly known as Ringo and grandson of former Ugandan president Idi Amin, was disqualified from his quarter-final bout following a headbutting ruling.
The latest reports concerning the four boxers now add another setback to Uganda’s Commonwealth Games campaign.
