Ugandan socialite Brian Kirumira, popularly known as Bryan White, has been granted mandatory bail by the High Court in Kampala after spending 293 days on remand at Luzira Prison without his case being committed to the High Court for trial.

The ruling, delivered by Justice Gadenya Paul Wolimbwa, followed an application based on the constitutional time limit for suspects facing offences triable only by the High Court.

Bryan White was arrested on November 13, 2025, and faces several charges, including aggravated human sacrifice, manslaughter, possession of narcotic drugs, conspiracy, giving false information, and rash or negligent acts in connection with the October 2025 death of 25-year-old Carol Nalubwama.

Under Article 23(6)(c) of the Constitution of Uganda, a person facing an offence triable only by the High Court must be released on mandatory bail if they have spent 180 days on remand without being committed for trial. The human sacrifice charge is triable by the High Court and carries a possible death penalty.

White had spent 113 days beyond the constitutional 180-day limit when the court considered his application.

Justice Wolimbwa ruled that the constitutional time limit applies regardless of the seriousness of the charges or who was responsible for the delay.

However, the ruling does not amount to an acquittal or dismissal of the charges. The case remains active and White remains an accused person.

His release comes with strict conditions, including a Shs 10 million cash deposit and two substantial sureties, each required to provide a Shs 50 million non-cash bond subject to court vetting.

White must also reside at a court-approved address, surrender his passport and obtain permission before leaving Uganda. He has been barred from contacting witnesses, the deceased’s family or his co-accused and must not interfere with ongoing investigations.

The court has also allowed him to seek his own medical treatment after release. Earlier reports indicated that he had been receiving treatment in prison for burn injuries.
